You set off from Asti, cross via Monsignor Marello (Hotel Salera) heading to Serra di Viatosto. Then you reach the Romanesque-Gothic Church of Maria Ausiliatrice in Viatosto, which is located on a hill overlooking the surrounding countryside and offers a 360° panorama over Rilate Valley and its town. Its construction dates back to the 12th century and it is open to visitors. After you pass the church, turn right at the crossroad on Strada Valbodoni. At the end of the road, turn left heading Valmanera and you will arrive at a small church. Walk 100 m from here all the way to the old school (“ij Amìs ‘d la Pera”). From here, turn right and you will get on an paved road. After you walk 100 m, get on the trail on the left that crosses the woods. After you pass a ridge, the trail stretches flat on the valley bottom. Once you reach the paved road, turn right on strada Birie. You will come to a crossroad where you can turn left heading Rocche di Callianetto. After you cross Maggiolino Stream, you will get to a crossroad. After approximately 200 m you will reach the road heading Calianetto. First turn right and then turn left immediately, heading the town of
Valmaggiore, hmlet of Stazione Portacomaro. From this point on, follow the
yellow road signs “on foot, by bike or on horseback”, erected by the Municipality of Castell’Alfero. After a steep climb on dirt road, keep on the left heading Bricco San Secondo. You will descend and turn left on an paved road. Now, the road will become a dirt road again, and keep walking due Castell‘Alfero. Once you cross a fenced residential home, get off the main road and turn left. You walk across the woods and after you pass an electrical
tower, you reach a paved road. Turn right, on Canton Maccario street and once you have walked it completely, turn left heading Castell’Alfero. At the Serra Perno crossroad, keep walking straight and you will arrive at an intersection with a votive shrine. Keep walking on the right heading to Castelletto. At the next intersection, turn left. Walk down a downhill dirt road. After you reach the valley at a crossroad, turn right and keep walking until the strada Contessi. Turn left and you will start walking uphill. At the intersection with the first road that goes to Castell’Alfero, turn right and go downhill. After a few tens of meters, turn left and you will get on a dirt road. Go down the valley heading the Castell’Alfero station. You will cross the “la Fornace” industrial site up until the second road, which goes up to Castell’Alfero. Here you can find food and interrupt the hike and go back to Asti by train or bus. At the crossroad, turn right toward Castell’Alfero Station and after a few tens of meters, turn left on via della Valle. Later you will get off the main road which bends left and continue straight along the road that narrows. After you walk past a fenced pond, turn right (Ignore the yellow road sign) and you will reach the Asti-Montiglio county road. Turn right heading Asti. Go over the rail crossing and turn left, on the dirt road, along the railway. At some point, the dirt road leaves the railway and bends right, towards the bridge across Versa Stream. Cross the bridge and turn left. You will walk on the dirt road alongside the stream. Leave the stream around a bridge and a rail crossing nearby. Then turn right heading C.na Amprai. Cross the road that joins the farm to the Tonco Station. Then you will walk straight on the dirt road. After a few hundred meters, you will arrive at the road that goes up to Perrona. Cross
this road and walk straight on dirt road. You will walk on a long flat stretch with Perrona on your right. At the first crossroads, turn left heading the fenced pond. Ignore the dirt road on your right, and walk ahead. Once you arrive at the bridge over Viazza Stream, turn right (but do not cross it) and keep walking on the dirt road, which goes away from the stream. Cross some meadows (uncertain trail) and you will arrive at another bridge. Follow the stream keeping it on your right all the way to the Penango Station. From here, you walk straight ahead up until you reach a rail crossing, turn right and cross the Viazza Stream and then turn left and walk along the stream. As you reach another bridge, turn right and then left towards the Fassa Bortolo facilities. At the intersection, keep walking ahead. As you arrive at the Alfiano Natta-Moncalvo road, walk heading Moncalvo-Castelletto Merli (Watch out for the traffic). Then you will reach the Guazzolo-Moncalvo intersection. Keep walking towards Castelletto Merli. There is a refreshment point in San Giuseppe. Keep walking due Castelletto Merli. After you walk 20 meters approximately, turn right heading toward a votive chapel. The road becomes a dirt road going uphill. As you arrive at the town of Bassignana, follow the paved road, which goes up towards Goido. Keep walking uphill along via Giotto, heading Ponzano. After a while, the road becomes a dirt road and goes up and down. After you reach the houses and M. Airolo paved road, walk a few hundred meters and you will arrive at a crossroad with a Superga-Crea sign. Here, turn right heading to Ponzano. After you cross the parish church, walk towards via Fossati. When you arrive at the Agriturismo C.na Zenevrea , turn right heading to Crea. You will arrive at the road which comes from Moncalvo. Turn left, heading to Crea, which you can see from here. You will walk close by the house of Crea park and arrive at the Sanctuary of Crea (refreshment point and guesthouse). Currently, the Crea Sanctuary cannot be reached by public transportation. To get back to Asti: take the train or bus from Serralunga di Crea.
